CAMU CAMU: what is it, and why should I care about it?

If you’ve never heard of Camu camu, don’t worry, you’re not alone!

We’re big fans of this superfood berry which comes from nutrient-rich soils of Amazon rainforest and is extremely popular in Peru and Brazil. We’re so fond of it we’ve included it in two of our SuperAge blends: Immunity and Energy.

Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a small plum-like reddish purple fruit with a whitish fleshy centre. Natives use it as a natural medicine, and it’s a popular ingredient in ice creams, confectionary and beverages in South America.

The fresh fruit has a tart, tangy astringent taste, but is more commonly consumed in the form of a fine, dried powder, which helps to concentrate its’ nutritional power.

What makes Camu camu a Superfood? And why have we included it in our SuperAge blends?

Camu camu is known for its high Vitamin C content and is also a good source of Manganese, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, Vitamin A and B3, making it a truly super superfood!
  • Immunity: Vitamin C is good for immunity, helping to fight infections and diseases, and combating Oxidative stress.
  • Energy: the presence of both Manganese and Vitamin C helps in maintaining energy levels and to reduce tiredness and fatigue.

Why not just take Vitamin C?

Along with Vitamin C, Camu Camu also offers a complex matrix of several micro-nutrients, fibre and phytochemicals such as beta carotenes and polyphenolic antioxidants, making it a preferred choice over synthetic Vitamin C supplements.
